At a special edition of “Winning on Wednesday,” called 10-4 powered by WOW, I had the pleasure of introducing my friend Mark Siegel, a certified personal mind trainer with over 30 years of experience in success and business coaching.
Mark delivered an insightful 10-minute presentation aimed at helping attendees overcome stress, worry, and anxiety—what he refers to as “hallucinating the wrong future.” His goal was to guide us in envisioning the right future by assessing where we are now, determining where we want to be, and bridging the gap between the two.
He emphasized the importance of having both time and money to achieve a desirable lifestyle, noting that many people have one without the other. Mark introduced the concept of transforming one’s journey into an adventure or quest by involving others, thus adding purpose and mission to personal goals. To maintain focus, he shared the acronym FOCUS: Follow One Course Until Successful.
Central to his presentation was a “magic formula” for predicting and creating one’s future:
I will accomplish X (specific goal) by Z (specific deadline) because of Y (underlying motivation or purpose).
He encouraged setting “smarter” goals, which are:
- Stated in positive terms: Focus on what you want to achieve rather than what you want to avoid.
- Within your control: Ensure the goal is achievable through your own actions.
- Sensory-based with measurable evidence: Define how you will see, hear, and feel the results.
- Ecological: The goal should be beneficial for you and others, now and in the future.
- Preserving positive intentions of old habits: When forming new habits, retain the positive aspects of old ones.
Mark highlighted the importance of choice in creating one’s future, encouraging us to design our lives intentionally rather than being victims of circumstances. He shared anecdotes, including a story about John Lennon prioritizing happiness and another about a lawyer who “created the circumstances” rather than working under them.
He concluded by urging us to write down our goals using the magic formula and to schedule the “finish line” in our calendars. This practice aims to maintain focus and momentum, turning the journey toward our goals into a fulfilling destination in itself.
